It's not just residental.....

Abandoned houses are easy to spot.  Businesses?  Different story in my opinion.   Are they reallly abandoned?   Or...are they listed with a Realtor for rent/sale?   Seen plenty with signs placed regarding rental and sale but have seen many without.   Today we're going to view 2 of the more known dumps in Huntington and an extra bonus.

Dairy Barn New York Ave/West 9th St.

I remember going here with my friend constantly for milk, bread, eggs, etc.  That was back in 1981. How long has this been out of business??  Always a great view when i step out from St. Hugh Of Lincoln.

Frank's Nursery.  No address is needed.  If you live in Huntington,  then you know where this is located on Jericho Turnpike.   Back in the day it went by another name.  May've been Flowertime but not sure.   This has been abandoned for so long that is has become the "norm."   For a nursery, it sure is in need of yard maintenance.  Have other pics showing other sides of the building but they seem unnecessary.  It's a dump no matter what side you view.

Is this an eyesore?   Walt Whitman movie theater has been out of business for a long, long, time.  Used to take the HART bus there to see the matinees.   With all the money being spent on upgrading the Walt Whitman Mall i'd have thought this would've been taken down.   Maybe some view it as a piece of Huntington history.  Maybe it's going to be back in business since the Commack Multiplex is no more.

The more run down houses the merrier

A quick update...no reply from Joseph Rose/Code Enforcement Officer.  I like the way that sounds....almost like a super-hero.   "Look up in the sky.  It's a bird.  It's a plane. No, it's Joesph Rose...Code Enforcement Officer.

Don't misinterpret me.  I don't know Joseph Rose and don't know what his his job entails.  I wish i did.  wish he'd have answered my e-mail to let me know what steps have been taken since my initial e-mail back in March.  For now, it seems like avoidance.

And now.....back to our regularly scheduled blog......

51 10th Ave.

58 East 12th St.

93 West 11th St.

151 West Pulaski Rd.

Aren't these 4 house beautiful?   How long have they been in this condition?  I don't know.  I'm just aware of them.  Plug the address into a map and you'll see that they're not really spread out.  To get these pictures i bike to and from each address.  Let's be honest....if you live in Huntington, then you know there are some sections "better" then others.   These houses sure wouldn't be found in Lloyd Harbor.

Stay tuned....business are coming up soon!!!  There are quite a few of those as well.

Does anyone care?

Cue music.   Sung to the tune of  "Ghostbusters........" When house falls down in your neighborhood....who you gonna call?.....Code Enforcement Officer!!!!"

These are two notices taped to the front door of 39 8th Avenue.   Don't be fooled by the date.  This is the second notices.  I don't have a picture of the original from months ago.  It was the same notice, just different dates.  It's almost laughable when you read them.  Who are "they" trying to contact at this house?  Do "they" expect someone to answer the door when they knock?  Surely there are records somewhere regarding who owns the property!!!

I was given an e-mail address from The Huntington Patch way back in March 2013.   I typed a quick e-mail and this was the response.  I have yet to delete it from my "saved" folder.

This was the orignal content of my e-mails....

Hello,

I moved into my Huntington neighborhood in 2008.  This house (see pic) has been in this state prior to that as i have lived in Huntingotn 49 years and would frequently drive by.   It is falling apart and, as hard as it is to believe, getting worse.  You cannot see the back of the house but one of the walls is missing!

This house should be condemned and knocked down.  There is no possible way to salvage it and make it livable.  Why is the town not doing something about this eyesore?  God onlyl knows if it's a health hazard, too.

This is a notice of some kind posted on the front door with a date of 12/26/2012. Evidently, someone knows this house is delapitated but doing nothing.

Any information would be appreciated.

This is the response i received.....

Attention: Chris Mozer

The town has an active case regarding the property located at 39 8th Avenue and the property is currently on the town’s blight list.  Since storm Sandy, the property suffered significantly more damage and required an additional inspection from the town’s engineering department. I believe the engineering department recommended  that structures on the property to be demolished.

If you have any further questions regarding this matter, you may contact the Patricia Flynn in the Town Attorney’s Office at 351-3042.

Regards,
Joseph Rose
Code Enforcement Officer

My jaw hit the ground when i read the line stating the house had gotten worse since Hurricane Sandy.  Guess Joseph Rose thought that prior to the hurricane that it was livable.  Who has on rose colored glasses and is living in a bubble?   That line may've satisfied someone from out of town but not someone who has driven/walked past it for years.  As stated previously, it's been a dump since at least 2008!

I have since tried contacting Joseph Rose a few days ago for an update but it has gone unanswered. Haven't contacted Patricia Flynn but it seems the next step.    Anyone got her e-mail??

39th 8th Avenue Revisted

Today's literary masterpiece was going to present some past info on that glorious piece of real estate on 8th Avenue.   But....took my faithful companion, Oy, on a walk today past the house and couldn't believe my eyes!!!  View the picture below to see what i saw.  Is this progress?
The Oy

The new & improved 39 8th ave.  Can you tell what is different?  If you said the paint job, then you'd be wrong.  Someone came and did some yard work!!  Now it looks much better....NOT.   The question is who did this and why?  Is this the first step toward demolition?  I hope so!  And also for you viewing please....look at the house next door!  This is what many rentals in Huntington look like!!

This trailer appeared on the property.  1st time i've ever seen it in all my years of walking/driving by.  Is it the owner of the property?  Is it a squatter?  Is it a meth lab (hey, i watch too much "Breaking Bad")

My previous picture on another post only showed one boat.  Didn't feel it was fair to leave out the other one.

I'm a "half empty glass" kind of guy.  For me, cleaning up the yard amounts to the same thing as putting sugar on dog crap.   It may look better, but underneath it is still crap.   Tune in tomorrow to see what some pencil pushing desk jockey told me in March 2013 about this property!!  Paz Y Amor!

How it all began........

Take a drive north on Park Avenue. This is the sign you'll see at the intersection of Broadway & Park Avenue. But.........take a drive on 8th Avenue and you'll see this?  Rather contradictory, isn't it?   My journey to becoming a blogger started with this house!!!

Front of house
Rear of house

Front of garage

Side of garage
Imagine living across the street!!!   Imagine staring at this everyday for days, weeks, months and......YES, even YEARS!!!    What is being done about?  Surely someone is looking into this!!!  Stay tuned.....the plot thickens!!!

Thank you to the Huntington Patch for the idea!

Earlier this week the Huntington Patch had an article regarding urban blight in Huntington.   Their article featured a picture of the long defunct Sitar Restaurant located on 665 Jericho Turnpike.  The Patch asked readers to name their (for lack of a better word) "favorite" urban blight building.   Sorry to say that i know several of them.
